Once you get used to wearing dentures, you might even forget they’re there. You may wonder whether it’s safe to wear your dentures around the clock, including while you sleep. Although modern dentures are designed for comfort, wearing them 24/7 without taking them out can increase your risk of oral health problems. Here’s why giving your mouth a break from your dentures is an important part of maintaining a healthy smile.
Why Should You Remove Your Dentures at Night?
Your gums and other oral tissues need time to rest without the constant pressure and friction of dentures. Wearing them continuously can irritate your gums, contribute to sore spots, and increase the likelihood of inflammation.
Sleeping with dentures can also increase your risk of denture-related stomatitis, an inflammatory condition often associated with yeast overgrowth. This condition can cause redness, irritation, and discomfort beneath your dentures. Poor denture hygiene and leaving dentures in place overnight can contribute to the problem.
Additionally, wearing dentures while sleeping has been associated with an increased risk of pneumonia, particularly among older adults and people with certain health conditions. Removing your dentures at night can help reduce these risks and support better oral hygiene.
How Should You Care for Your Dentures Overnight?
For most denture wearers, removing dentures before bed is recommended. Follow these steps to keep your dentures and mouth clean:
- Clean your dentures daily: Brush them gently with a denture brush and a nonabrasive denture cleanser to remove food particles, plaque, and buildup.
- Clean your mouth: Even if you wear full dentures, gently clean your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth. If you have remaining natural teeth, brush and floss them as recommended.
- Store them properly: Place your dentures in water or an appropriate denture-soaking solution overnight, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Some denture materials can warp if they dry out.
- Give your gums time to recover: Keep your dentures out while sleeping unless your dentist has specifically advised otherwise.
Avoid using hot water, which can distort your dentures and affect their fit.
Are There Exceptions to the Rule?
Your dentist may recommend wearing new dentures for a short period after delivery, including overnight, to help identify pressure spots. However, this is usually a temporary instruction, and you should follow your dentist’s specific guidance.
If your dentures feel uncomfortable, slip frequently, or cause persistent sores, schedule an appointment. Your dentist can determine whether an adjustment, reline, or replacement is necessary.
Although dentures can restore your smile and improve daily function, wearing them 24/7 isn’t generally recommended. Removing them at night gives your oral tissues a chance to rest and helps you maintain better oral hygiene.
